The build in brief

  • The release of the open-source stl2step engine got people talking about STL-to-STEP conversion.
  • Someone asked whether it could be a plugin instead of a standalone tool.
  • That sounded like a challenge, so the idea became plugins for FreeCAD and Fusion 360.

The question that started it

After the open-source stl2step engine was released, people were talking about converting STL meshes into STEP geometry. Someone asked whether it could be a plugin instead of a standalone application.

Challenge accepted.

Put the conversion where the work already happens

The result is two plugins: one for FreeCAD and one for Autodesk Fusion 360. Both are aimed at bringing STL-to-STEP conversion into the CAD tool where the editable geometry will be used next.

This was not an attempt to make mesh conversion magically perfect. It was about reducing the distance between a useful conversion capability and the place someone is already working.
